China Cup International Regatta

15/11/2013 - Bénéteau

China Cup
The 7th China Cup took place from 25 to 28 October in the Bay of Longcheer, close to Shenzhen. 100 teams from 35 different countries took part, 28 of which were FIRST 40.7s. Attracting a greater number of participants every year, from all over the world, this race has become the largest sailing meeting in Asia.
Invited by Beneteau, for the first time, two members of the BENETEAU YACHT CLUB took part in the event. Francis M. and Christophe D. met up in China, catapulted into a top-level crew, with, at the helm of TEAM Beneteau China, Sébastien Col, many times world champion at match racing, youngest helmsman of an America class (AREVA Challenge) and also winner of ocean races (Tour de France à la Voile).
In a few extracts from his BYC website log book F, Christophe D. tells us about his adventure: ?Everything began on Monday 23 September on my return from a job in Guiana. I received an email from YvesMANDIN, Beneteau's Premium Service Manager, who told me that I had been chosen among the BYC members to join the Beneteau China team for the China Cup 2013, which would take place in a month's time in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. (?)
After checking that it wasn't an April fool's, the first reflex is to check your diary and make sure that you are available to grab such an opportunity. I had vague knowledge of the China Cup. I read a full article in Voile Magazine a few years ago, and I was able to discuss the Beneteau operation which consisted in selling thirty or so First 40.7s to China. However, I never thought that I would have the chance to take part one day and go and race in China in a top-class race and with a high level crew.
On board, the high level matched the performance records and skills of our most experienced sailors: Sébastien Col, Pierre Follenfant (Vendée Globe), Thierry Barot (several America's Cup campaigns), Eric Ingouf (First Range Development Manager with Beneteau), etc., and it is not always easy to find one's marks, but like everything, practice, hard work and concentration improve things day by day! (?)
In short, it was a unique experience, both on a competitive and human level and a success, thanks to a welcoming, friendly and open crew. My heartfelt thanks go to Beneteau for giving me this opportunity.
In just a few years, the China Cup has acquired an international reputation and moved into the big league. Beneteau, as a partner from the beginning, Beneteau is delighted to be able to share this wonderful event with its customers.
