Logistics Methods Technician
The missions of the logistics methods technician
The role of logistics methods technician involves identifying and eliminating waste within the company and optimising all logistics flows. It is a role that combines fieldwork and analysis, in the service of collective performance and the well-being of operators.
What I really enjoy about my job on a day-to-day basis is being in contact with the teams, living and working within a logistics warehouse with collective objectives to achieve. I have my own objectives but I get even more satisfaction from achieving the goals of a group, of a company.
Alexandre, Logistics Methods Technician
On a day-to-day basis, the logistics methods technician moves between the various buildings and stores on site to ensure that organisation, safety and daily objectives are being met. They implement lean tools such as the "milk run", which optimises operator movements and ensures no delivery point is missed. Their role also involves passing on these tools and methods to operational teams through clear and accessible visual supports.
The essential tools for this role are the Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint), the company's ERP system and lean logistics tools. The key qualities are critical thinking, the ability to step back and assess situations, a passion for knowledge-sharing and supporting operators on a human level.
Initial training and apprenticeship
Several qualifications provide access to the role of logistics methods technician. The usual entry point is the Baccalaureate in Logistics, which can be followed by a Professional Certificate as a Senior Technician in Logistics Methods and Operations (TSMEL, level Bac+2), a BTS in Transport and Associated Logistics Management, or a BUT in Industrial Quality, Logistics and Organisation (QLIO).
These programmes are available as initial training or apprenticeships, through a work-study contract (ages 16 to 30) or a professionalisation contract (from age 16, with no upper age limit). They are offered notably by AFPA, AFTRAL and the Promotrans network, and are eligible for CPF funding.
Professional retraining
The logistics methods technician role is accessible to candidates retraining from operational logistics or flow management backgrounds. It is entirely possible to start out in order picking and gradually move into methods roles through training available at specialist centres (AFPA, AFTRAL, Promotrans) or via the Validation of Prior Learning (VAE) scheme.
These programmes can be funded by France Travail, the OPCOs or through a Professional Transition Project (CPF de transition).
Career development
After several years of experience, the logistics methods technician can progress to roles such as logistics team leader, planning manager or scheduling manager. Further training towards a Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management or a qualification as an International Logistics Operations Manager (level Bac+5) also opens the door to logistics director or continuous improvement manager positions within large industrial groups.
